Girls Varsity Soccer Journeys Onto States

The Friends Academy girls soccer team was anticipating a tough game against their long time rival Stonybrooke for the title of Long Island Champion. The start of the game was a bit rough, as both teams came out strong and eager. The FA girls were putting up a good fight and the team camaraderie stayed strong. Although the FA girls were dominating the field, no one could seem to get the ball in the goal; however, things turned around when Jamie Genatt (number 20) scored the first goal with an assist from Jesse Babicz (number 11) with 10 minutes left in the first half. At the start of the second half, the girls took the field with confidence and looked ready for a win.  The first goal in the second half was scored pretty quickly, and was put in the top right corner of the goal by Alexis Toles. After Alexis’ second goal, the girls could not be stopped. One after another goals were being scored; the remainging four goals were scored by Alexis, Krystina Iordanou, Shekinah Pettway and Jesse Babicz. Claudia Ratner, the goalie, only had to stop one ball the entire game because the opposing team could not get past the strong defense. The whistle was blown, and with an exultant win of 6-0, the girls moved on to play for the regional title.

The girls went up against S.S Seward this year for the regional title. They had played against S.S Seward in the same round last year and unfortunately lost 2-1. However, this year the girls brought their “A” game. Jamie Genatt assisted Kasey Katz’s goal in the start of the second half, bringing the score to 1-0. The girls kept up the 1-0 lead until Heather scored the last goal of the game. The final score was 2-0, leaving Friends Academy the title as the Southeast Regional Champions. This was the first time in the history of Friends Academy girl’s soccer that the team made it to states.

States was an exciting weekend for the girls. I spoke to senior, Jamie Genatt, who said that “it was a weekend she will never forget.” The girls went up to Cortland Friday morning, and got ready for their early game on Saturday. In the semi-finals the girls played Keshakwa, a team from upstate NY that was 21-0. It was a tough game, with a lot of scoring for both teams. The final score was 3-2, Friends Academy, which meant the girls were off to the finals. The finals were on Sunday at 10:30 against Hoosick Falls. It was apparently one of the most exciting games for the girls and the fans. The teams were so evenly matched that by the end of the 80 minutes, it was 0-0. The game went into two 10 minute half overtimes, where the score remained 0-0. That was followed by 10 minutes of sudden death where neither team scored again. In the state finals, if the teams are still tied after both overtimes, the game is called as a tie. So, Friends Academy and Hoosick Falls were Co-State Champions. First time in history for a girls sports team at FA to win states! Congratulations Girls Varsity Soccer!
