“Before the Flood”: Why Climate Change is a Political Issue

Before I start this article, I would like to tell you that everyone should watch “Before the Flood” by National Geographic, even if you have no interest in climate change.  This documentary, narrated by Leonardo Dicaprio, has gone viral with over 10 million views on YouTube in less than a week.

The documentary compares the history of climate change to the painting, “The Garden of Earthly Delights” by Hieronymus Bosch.  The first panel of this painting is the sinless world with Adam, Eve, and God.  It is the perfect world that has nothing wrong with it.  Leonardo compares this section to before humans began to emit CO2 at an unnatural rate.  We went about our daily business not affecting nature on a large scale that we do today.

The second panel of the painting is much more interesting and is the stage at which we are at right now.  The seven deadly sins begin to appear, and there is much more chaos than the first panel of peace and tranquility.  This section represents the world we know of today with overpopulation and an excess of delights.

The third and final panel of “The Garden of Earthly Delights” is hellish and complete chaos.  It is the antithesis of the perfect world that Adam and Eve lived in.  There is complete darkness, with the exception of fires ravaging the earth.  War appears in this scene with brutal deaths and killings.  Leonardo compares this section of the painting to what the Earth will be like, if humans do not act on global warming.  It will be a period of extreme natural disasters, and islands vanishing from sight because the ice caps will be nonexistent.  This place is where we are headed, and it is advancing upon us quicker than anyone can imagine.

So, if climate change is such a big problem, how do we fix it?  In my opinion, the only way to fix global warming is by having a political revolution.  We need leaders who will put high taxes on fossil fuel production and consumption, thus making it impossible for them to profit leading to alternate solutions to produce energy like solar.  Also, tax breaks to clean energy users and producers will further speed up change we desperately need.  Bernie Sanders is the closest anyone has gotten to the White House without the help of these major donors.  He has sparked a revolution where people do not care what other people think of them, but what they believe is right.  The fossil fuel industry has donated to enough members of congress that no clean energy bills have been able to get passed because these companies have donated millions of dollars to these politicians.  Every single climate change denier has received millions of dollars from fossil fuel companies, including Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz.  We cannot let these politicians ruin the environment, so they can please their donors.

We need major change, and not just turning off lights when you are not using them or shutting off air conditioning.  This is nice, but if you really want change, let your voice be heard that you are not okay with fossil fuel companies destroy the environment.

The people who call climate change a hoax are just plain ignorant.  Their main explanation that there is no climate change is that in the past fifteen years there has been absolutely no rise in the climate.  That is like saying humans are not evolving because in the past fifteen years we have not seen any meaningful development.  They both are just wrong.  Climate change is very gradual, and you have to look at the past 100-200 years. It is not only the change in temperature that you should look at but also the drastic increase in CO2 levels that are congruent with the increase in climate.

To sum it all up, the politicians are the people who have the power to affect our environment.  “Before the Flood” brings light to this real world problem that we have to focus on this problem to save the future of our planet.  Finally, if you have not seen this incredible documentary, watch it, and you will be a forever changed person.
