Friends Academy Girls Varsity Tennis takes the win over the Great Neck South Rebels in the Conference II-A Nassau County Championship. Although the Rebels have beaten us twice in the regular season, we beat them in the finals, at Wheatley High School, when it mattered the most with a score of 4-3. Our coach, Brian Baxter, was ecstatic about the win and said he also felt “relieved.” During the season, after we won a match against Wheatley, Baxter stated that one of our team’s goal is: “[to] get better with each match” and that “we’d like to run the tables and make it into the playoffs.” With his coaching and the hard work done by my teammates and I, out goal was achieved. Our team has worked tremendously hard, playing 9 matches in just 12 days due to inclement weather. In the finals, Friends Academy’s single players, Julia Ciardullo, Calista Sha, and Morgan Wilkins, won all of their matches. However, it was Wilkins’ match that tied this victory all together at the end with a score of 6-4 6-2. Wilkins said that she felt that she played her opponent “a lot smarter this time around.” Danielle Kahn, a senior, believed this accomplishment was made possible because of teamwork. She said: “because everyone was doing their part, working hard, and working together, our season and our win in the finals was successful.” The seniors on our team were especially overjoyed because their last season of high school tennis was ultimately a pure victory.
