The Boys Varsity Soccer team arrived to Middletown, New York on Friday unsure of the future and came home Sunday night with the 2013 New York State Class C Championship title. The team ended their year with a 15-1-2 record. In the Semi-Finals on Saturday, under the lights, Friends Academy played against Lake George. The combination of Jonny Nierenberg, Harrison Seideman, and Max Heffron all scoring and goalkeeper Brandon Rosenbaum saving five shots led Friends Academy to their first victory in the tournament. Boys Varsity Soccer then advanced to the Finals to play against Lansing. From the minute the game started, Lansing double teamed All-State player, Jonny Nierenberg. However, other Friends Academy teammates organized plays, which created opportunities to score goals. The score at the end of the first half was 0-0. While the team could have given up and felt dejected, the boys pushed on. In the 60th minute of play, Pat Moodhe threw the ball in, and Jonny Nierenberg headed the ball into the net, scoring the first and only goal of the game.
Both teams vigorously fought for the State title, but the Quakers fought harder and became champions. Sadly, this dream team is graduating seven seniors this year, but with many skilled juniors and underclassmen, Friends Academy hopes for a strong performance next year. Congratulations boys on an amazing season!
