Trends of Fall and Spring

Fall 2011 is here, and it is time for girls to get shopping. Fashion week in Paris and New York is always a good indicator of what people will be wearing around town (and campus) these days. This season, fashion week set some major trends in outerwear, and fabrics for fall, as well as patterns and themes for spring. In addition we learned that colors don’t have to be neutral, and some long standing fashion rules can finally be broken.

For fall:

For outerwear, Capes and Ponchos are definitely in. Anything goes, from tailored to bohemian. If you want to stick to the more traditional jacket, a military jacket or a varsity style are the looks of the moment.

Finally, FA girls will be stylish while staying in code, as long hemlines are in for fall. Miniskirts are being replaced with knee length skirts and the styles are classic or bohemian.

As for colors, no need to stick with traditional fall neutrals. Designers are showing that fall clothing can be colorful, and Polka dots and dainty prints are no longer reserved for spring. In the past nobody would have dreamed of white after Labor Day, and now the top designers are sending white down their runways.

Most likely inspired by the royal wedding, hats are making a comeback this fall. This trend is very versatile, as anything goes, from a military to a floppy to a fedora. If you are too self consciousness to make this kind of statement, you can get a furry hat, or cap that covers you ears, making you look both fashionable and practical.

For spring: (if you are interested in getting a little head start on your shopping)

Marc Jacob’s spring collection accented loafers this year. FA girls stick to flats for the most part, so if you want to be original, and take a fashion risk, loafers are a good start.

Just like the fall, bold colors are staying in for spring. This trend was especially used in the lines of Milly and Nanette Lepore. As for patterns, nautical is a big one. This pattern is a horizontal blue and white stripe, which looks great on a sweater or bag.

Last but not least, a bowler bag for this spring is a must. Not only has it been used in almost all of the runway shows, but this style bag is being carried by almost all of the celebs. These bags are roomy and light, perfect for a day in the city or even just a walk around town.
